Montana sits on the northern plains edge of Midwestern pheasant country—especially eastern crop/grass counties—backed by Wildlife Management Areas, federal public land, and FWP’s Block Management private-access program. This guide summarizes the 2026–27 ring-necked pheasant framework from Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP). 2026–27 season dates

Official FWP Upland Game Bird booklet status: Finalized (Commission-adopted Dec. 4, 2025; valid March 1, 2026 – Feb. 28, 2027).

Nonresident public / Block Management delay (critical)

FWP Highlights: nonresidents hunting on public lands and on privately owned lands that are part of a hunting access program begin 10 days later than residents for all upland species except mountain grouse. For pheasant that means Oct. 20 on WMAs, BLM/USFS/state trust where open, and Block Management Areas—not Oct. 10.

Plan openers accordingly: private permission outside Block Management / other FWP access programs, or wait until Oct. 20.

• Cock (rooster) pheasants only
• Means of take: shotgun not larger than 10 gauge, or long/recurve/compound bow—other means prohibited for pheasant
• Evidence of sex: keep required sex ID on pheasants per MCA/CR transport rules in the booklet
• Non-toxic shot: required for upland hunting on many federal wetlands/WPAs—confirm for the unit

Block Management and public access

Block Management is FWP’s cooperative private-land hunting access program (plus some enrolled public parcels). Regional offices administer BMAs; the annual Block Management Hunting Access Guide lists enrolled lands.

Key rules from FWP Block Management / Upland materials:

• Guide available online (order/ship window typically June 1 – Dec. 31); maps and regulations posted beginning mid-August (booklet notes guide available Aug. 15; earliest BMA reservation date Aug. 22)
• Type I BMA: hunter obtains own permission (sign-in boxes or no permission required)—usually no hunter-number caps
• Type II BMA: landowner or FWP staff issues permission—often reservations, pasture assignments, hunter limits
• Read each BMA’s rules (vehicles, camping, retrieval, boundaries); green/orange signage conventions on site
• No separate Block Management “ticket” beyond required hunting licenses—program is funded in part by license fees

Pair BMAs with WMAs, DNRC state lands where open, and federal BLM/USFS/WPA options. Montana law generally requires landowner permission on private land not enrolled in Block Management.

• Eastern Montana farm/CRP belts (Missouri and Milk River drainages and adjoining prairie counties) for classic rooster cover
• Shelterbelts, cattail/wetland edges, and winter wheat/grass mixes after cold fronts
• Opening stretch: residents can work public land and BMAs Oct. 10; nonresidents need a non-access-program private plan or wait until Oct. 20
• Midweek and late December often quieter than opener on popular BMAs
