North Dakota Pheasant Hunting 2026

North Dakota pheasant country is prairie CRP, shelterbelts, and cattail winter cover—backed by one of the Midwest’s largest private walk-in programs (PLOTS). This guide summarizes the 2026–27 framework from North Dakota Game and Fish (NDGF). Always verify dates, bag limits, and fees on the official site before you buy licenses or hunt.

2026–27 season dates

Nonresident first seven days (critical)

Under NDCC 20.1-08-04.9, nonresidents may not hunt any game on NDGF wildlife management areas (WMAs) or Conservation PLOTS during the first seven days of regular pheasant season—Oct. 10–16, 2026.

• Exception: nonresidents hunting on PLOTS land they own
• Restriction applies to all hunting, not just pheasants
• Does not apply to federal WPAs, state school lands, or private land not enrolled in PLOTS (see NDGF nonresident licensing page)

Plan openers accordingly: private permission outside PLOTS, federal options, or wait until Oct. 17.

• Male (rooster) pheasants only
• Transport ID: keep one leg and foot or a fully feathered head or wing attached until final storage (small-game proclamation penalty section)

PLOTS and public access

Private Land Open To Sportsmen (PLOTS) is NDGF’s walk-in hunting program on enrolled private land. NDGF’s Aug. 14, 2026 news release: about 925,000 PLOTS acres for 2026; map sheets update weekly; free printed guides available late August at vendors (not by mail).

Key public-use rules from the PLOTS guide:

• Open for walk-in hunting within legal seasons (or as signed)—foot travel with legal firearm/bow and hunting gear
• Other activities need written landowner permission
• Do not leave gear unattended without permission
• Yellow inverted triangular PLOTS signs mark tracts; if a map says PLOTS but signs are missing, do not enter until you confirm with NDGF
• Treat tracts like your own: pack out shells/trash, don’t block approaches, keep clear of livestock

Use the North Dakota Hunting Atlas, weekly PLOTS map sheets, and the NDGF mobile app. Pair PLOTS with WMAs and federal Waterfowl Production Areas—remember non-toxic shot rules on many federal wetlands.

Where to focus (practical, not legal advice)

• Southeast and south-central crop/CRP mixes for classic rooster cover
• Shelterbelts and cattail sloughs after cold fronts (late season)
• Opening week: residents can work WMAs/PLOTS; nonresidents need a non-PLOTS/WMA plan Oct. 10–16
• Midweek and late December–early January often fish quieter than the opener

Gear notes for North Dakota

• Blaze orange is recommended (not generally required) for upland hunting per NDGF safety guidance—wear it anyway, especially during deer gun season overlap
