Bag limits and rules of thumb
- Cocks only — only rooster (male) pheasants may be taken.
- Daily limit 3, possession 15, accruing at three birds per day.
- Some refuges and special areas open later (for example certain game bird refuges open Dec. 1; Sand Lake NWR has a delayed open). Check the handbook maps before you go.
- Non-toxic shot is required for small game on most public lands.

Public access: GPA and Walk-In
South Dakota offers a large public footprint for pheasants:
