Best Public Land Pheasant Hunting by State
A practical overview of public and walk-in pheasant opportunity across six Midwestern states. “Best” here means reliable access + wild-bird habitat—not a guarantee of limits. Populations swing with weather, CRP, and nesting success; read each state’s brood reports when published.

South Dakota
Why hunters go: Density, tradition, and a huge signed Walk-In + GPA footprint. Shooting hours open at 10 a.m. Central.
Public playbook: String together Walk-In grass tracts with wetland GPAs. Hunt midweek after opener pressure drops.

Nebraska
Why hunters go: Atlas land near crop country; less national hype than SD on some weekends.
Public playbook: Build routes from the Public Access Atlas; add WMAs as anchors.

Kansas
Why hunters go: Northwest and west-central counties with milo, wheat, and CRP; WIHA often exceeds a million acres statewide in recent years.
Public playbook: Download the current WIHA map/app layer; combine WIHA with state wildlife areas. Cimarron National Grassland is a southwest public option (mixed upland opportunity).
Bag (recent official regs pattern): 4 cocks daily, possession typically 4× daily. 2026 dates: secondary sources list Nov. 8, 2026 – Jan. 31, 2027—confirm on ksoutdoors.gov before booking travel. License prices: TBD — buy via official KDWP licensing.
Iowa
Why hunters go: Rooster pheasants on a clear DNR calendar; strong tradition in northern and western counties.
Public playbook: Use Iowa DNR hunting maps for public areas; respect private land. Shooting hours for rooster pheasant are listed as 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on the DNR seasons table.
Official dates: Youth Oct. 24–25, 2026; regular Oct. 31, 2026 – Jan. 10, 2027; daily 3 / possession 12 (Iowa DNR hunting seasons).
North Dakota
Why hunters go: PLOTS signs across prairie habitat; often lighter crowds than the SD interstate corridor.
Public playbook: Mix WMAs and PLOTS. Nonresidents: note the statutory restriction—nonresidents may not hunt game during the first seven days of pheasant season on ND Game and Fish WMAs or Conservation PLOTS (with limited ownership exceptions). See gf.nd.gov/hunting/pheasant.
Official dates: Regular Oct. 10, 2026 – Jan. 3, 2027; youth Oct. 3–4, 2026 (finalized on agency page). Bag limits: confirm in current ND regulations.
Minnesota
Why hunters go: Southwest prairie counties with WMAs, federal WPAs, and Walk-In Access sites.
Public playbook: Layer WMA + WPA maps with WIA parcels. Purchase the $3 WIA validation if hunting Walk-In Access land (MN DNR WIA).
Official dates: Oct. 10, 2026 – Jan. 3, 2027 (Upland birds season dates). Bag: 2 roosters daily early, 3 from Dec. 1; possession 6 / 9 respectively per DNR pheasant hunting guidance—confirm in the current regs booklet. Pheasant stamp requirements apply for many adult hunters.
