Pheasant Hunting Gear Checklist
Pack for miles of grass, weather that changes its mind, and roosters that flush behind you. Catalog aesthetics don’t find birds. Dry feet, a patterned gun, and a vest that doesn’t fight your mount do.
This is the field list we actually use as a trip scaffold—curated, not maximalist.
Core hunting kit

- Upland boots with membrane and tread that likes mud and stubble
- Brush pants or gaiters—rose does not negotiate (apparel guide)
- Layering: merino/synthetic base, insulating mid, wind shell
- Gloves thin enough to run the safety; a dry spare in the vest
- Packable rain shell for prairie squalls
Vest and carry
- Shell loops or boxes you can open with cold fingers
- Bird bag that breathes; zip bags for the truck
- Water bottle slots (you and the dog)
- Small pouch: multi-tool, tape, snacks, blister kit

Navigation and access

- Power bank + cable
- Headlamp for pre-dawn parking (watch state shooting hours—SD traditional is 10 a.m.; MN pheasant is 9 a.m.)
Dog gear (if hunting with a dog)
- Vest water / collapsible bowl
- First-aid (booties, wrap, tick tool)
- GPS or bell; whistle
- Towel and crate comfort for the truck
