Pheasant Brood Reports Explained
Every August, Midwest wildlife agencies put biologists on gravel roads at dawn to count roosters, hens, and chicks. Those brood or roadside surveys are the closest thing most hunters get to a pre-season “stock report.” This page teaches you how to read them—what the numbers mean, what they do not mean, and which official products to open for South Dakota, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Minnesota.
What a brood report is trying to measure
Late-summer roadside surveys answer three practical questions for managers (and for trip planners):
- How many birds are out there relative to last year? Year-over-year change.
- How does this year compare to “normal”? Usually a 5- or 10-year average.
- Did production work? Broods seen, chicks per brood, and age structure when recorded.
They are indexes, not total population censuses. A route that runs 30 miles on cool, dewy mornings does not count every pheasant in the county—it counts birds that are visible from that road under standardized conditions so years can be compared.
Common metrics you will see

Rule of thumb: Prefer region tables over the single statewide headline. Pheasants are patchy. A statewide “flat” year can hide a boom in northwest Iowa and a soft northeast—or a Smoky Hills rebound while one High Plains pocket softens.
How agencies actually run the count
Methods differ, but the core idea is shared: drive fixed routes early on mornings with heavy dew, light wind, and clear skies, when birds sit on gravel to dry and warm.

Iowa DNR notes that cool, sunny, dewy, calm mornings produce the most consistent results. When fog, rain, or wind dominate part of the survey window, biologists will say so—treat regional nuance carefully in those years.
A five-step read before you book lodging
- Open the current-year agency release or PDF, not a Facebook screenshot. Bookmark the links in the table above.
- Find your hunt region (NW Iowa, Smoky Hills, southwest MN farmland, south-central ND, Panhandle NE, east-central SD). Statewide averages hide the map you will actually walk.
- Stack three numbers: this year, last year, and the 5- or 10-year average. “Down 10% from a boom year” is different from “down 10% and below the decade average.”
- Separate spring crowing from summer broods. Spring crowing indexes breeding males (often last year’s recruitment). Summer broods index this year’s hatch and chick survival. Kansas biologists routinely remind hunters that spring strength is not a finished fall forecast until brood routes are in.
- Pair bird indexes with access and cover. A hot brood region with thin public walk-in or emergency-hayed CRP still hunts hard. Cross-check walk-in atlases the week you leave.
Worked examples from recent official releases
Iowa (2026 August roadside)
Iowa DNR (Sept. 1, 2026): statewide average 23 birds per route—second highest in more than a decade, behind only 2025. Biologist Todd Bogenschutz flagged imperfect survey weather after Aug. 5 (overcast, rain, fog). Expectation: a pretty good season; Northwest, North-Central, and West-Central comparable to 2025; biggest decrease likely in the Northeast. Season opener noted as Oct. 31 in that release—confirm bag and hours on the Iowa DNR seasons page before you pack.
Hunter takeaway: A “second-best-in-a-decade” statewide index still asks you to pick regions. Do not abandon Iowa because the count dipped from a peak year.
North Dakota (roadside brood survey language)
ND Game & Fish reports totals such as pheasants observed per 100 miles, broods per 100 miles, average brood size, and percent change vs last year and the 10-year average, based on hundreds of runs on fixed brood routes. Read the official brood survey news for the current numbers before you plan a PLOTS week—do not reuse a prior year’s headline.
Hunter takeaway: Broods/100 miles and brood size together tell you whether production held. Flat adult counts with soft brood metrics can mean tougher hunting later as pressure concentrates.
Kansas (birds per mile by region)
KDWP’s summer brood survey reports pheasants per mile by small-game region (Smoky Hills, Northern/Southern High Plains, South-Central Prairies, and others). Media forecasts quoting KDWP (e.g. 2025 brood rebound with large Smoky Hills gains) are useful only when they name the biologist and the regional table—always verify against the KDWP brood PDF library for the year you are hunting.
Hunter takeaway: Kansas is a regional game. Western High Plains and central Smoky Hills can diverge in the same summer.
Nebraska (mail carriers, not classic brood routes)
Nebraska leans on July rural mail carrier surveys plus biologist field notes for its Upland Game Bird Hunting Outlook. That is still a standardized index—just a different observer network than dawn biologist routes. Look for percent change by pheasant management region (Panhandle, Southwest, Sandhills, etc.) in the outlook PDF when posted.
Hunter takeaway: Treat NE’s outlook as a regional planning map, then open the Public Access Atlas for Open Fields and Waters parcels.
Minnesota (August Roadside Survey)
MN DNR’s long-running ARS reports birds per 100 miles (and rooster/hen/brood breaks) across farmland regions. Download the current PDF from the pheasant program pages rather than relying on last year’s file name in a search result.
Hunter takeaway: Southwest farmland routes have historically carried the strongest indexes—confirm the year’s regional table before you choose lodging towns.
South Dakota (brood survey discontinued)
GFP’s Management of Pheasants and the 2024–2028 Ring-necked Pheasant Action Plan state that the August roadside pheasant brood survey was discontinued in 2020 so staff could prioritize habitat and access. Today GFP monitors with hunter harvest surveys and publishes an annual upland outlook built from weather, habitat, and staff expertise—not a birds-per-mile brood table.
Hunter takeaway: Do not dig for a 2026 SD “brood report” that no longer exists. Read the Upland Outlook PDF, then plan parcels on the Public Hunting Atlas.
Mistakes that waste a trip
- Treating a statewide percent change as your county forecast.
- Booking on spring crowing alone before summer broods post.
- Comparing Iowa birds/route to Kansas birds/mile as if they were the same unit.
- Ignoring the agency note that survey weather was poor for half the window.
- Skipping South Dakota’s harvest/outlook products while hunting for a discontinued brood index.
- Forgetting that access + cover + pressure decide your week after the birds are “on paper.”
