2026 Midwest Pheasant Forecast

Mild winters and strong carryover from the 2025 boom have most Midwestern pheasant states lined up for another strong season. This page is a planning snapshot for DIY hunters comparing South Dakota, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Minnesota. Use it to pick a state and a timing window—then verify the latest brood survey or handbook on the agency site before you buy lodging.

Numbers rule: Harvest totals, birds-per-route, and survey percentages below come from fetched agency releases or quoted biologist comments in published outdoor-media forecasts. If a figure is not verified here, we say check agency outlook—we do not invent harvest numbers.

South Dakota

GFP’s 2026 Upland Outlook reports that nearly 140,000 hunters harvested over 1.35 million pheasants in 2025—the highest recent harvest—with 9.7 birds per hunter (highest since 2011). An additional 400,000 birds were harvested on preserves.

For 2026, GFP cites reduced snowfall (high overwinter survival), near-normal spring precip/temps, and timely summer rain in the primary range. The outlook is expected to be much like last year, with good production and favorable habitat. Caveats:

Iowa

Iowa DNR’s Sept. 1, 2026 release: the August statewide pheasant survey averaged 23 birds per route—second highest in more than a decade, behind only 2025. Biologist Todd Bogenschutz said hunters should expect a pretty good season; Northwest, North-Central, and West-Central should be comparable to 2025, with the biggest drop likely in the Northeast. Survey conditions after Aug. 5 were imperfect (overcast/rain/fog), so treat regional nuance carefully.

Kansas

Kansas entered 2026 off a strong 2025 recruitment year. The Pointing Dog Journal / Retriever Journal 2026 Upland Gamebird Hunting Forecast (Aug. 2026) quotes KDWP’s Jeff Prendergast on spring crowing surveys: statewide index 12.65 per stop (+14% from 2025), with statistically significant increases in Northern High Plains, Southern High Plains, and Smoky Hills (Southern High Plains 25.22). Prendergast noted spring surveys measure last year’s recruitment; summer moisture improved habitat again, with caution about heavy May–June rain during peak hatch. Check KDWP brood/roadside products when you leave—do not treat spring crowing alone as a fall harvest forecast.

Nebraska

Nebraska Game and Parks’ upland outlook (relayed via The Outdoor Wire, Aug. 2026) is optimistic after a mild winter:

North Dakota

ND Game & Fish biologist R.J. Gross (quoted in the Aug. 2026 upland forecast and state media): 2025 harvest was 344,975 roosters (down ~3% from 2024) with 53,008 hunters. Spring 2026 crowing surveys were up ~9% after another mild winter. Nesting weather was generally good with some localized storms; Gross emphasized that late-summer roadside counts set the true fall picture—check agency outlook for the roadside release before you commit lodging.

Nonresidents: confirm first-week WMA/PLOTS restrictions on gf.nd.gov pheasant.

Minnesota

MN DNR farmland biologist Roy Churchwell (quoted in the Aug. 2026 Pointing Dog Journal / Retriever Journal forecast): last summer’s index was especially strong in the Southwest (nearly 40% above long-term average); statewide sat near the long-term average. Mild winter + generally good spring/summer weather point to another strong season. We have not fetched a published 2026 August roadside PDF in this pass—confirm the live MN DNR pheasant / roadside survey product before you treat any statewide birds-per-100-miles figure as current.

How to use this forecast on a DIY trip

  1. Pick the state that matches your dates and license style (SD nonresident 5-day blocks vs KS/NE/IA/ND/MN annual-style licenses—see each state guide).
  2. Refresh the interactive atlas the week you leave—enrollments and emergency haying change cover.
  3. Avoid treating opener weekends as the only window. Midweek and mid/late November often fish better on walk-in ground when pressure drops.
  4. Stack parcels. Plan 15–20 walk-in / GPA / WMA options; hole-hop when a tract is hammered.
  5. Watch drought and haying maps in southern SD, western NE, and western KS/ND pockets.
